Description
“Crazy,” “terrible,” “disgusting” — that’s what voters like you are saying when you hear a losing candidate wants to throw out your ballots using desperate and outlandish legal theories, all in order to steal a seat on the N.C. Supreme Court. Multiple recounts and careful election audits confirmed that Justice Allison Riggs won the most votes to keep her seat on our state’s highest court. But rather than concede, her opponent is asking the state Supreme Court to undermine the will of 60,000 voters, with young people and Black voters challenged at higher rates. We're calling on all voters to get in formation: join Common Cause North Carolina and coalition partners for a virtual town hall on Thursday, January 23, from 6:30pm-7:30pm on Zoom to learn more about this case, hear from impacted voters, and find out what you can do next. To check whether you're on Griffins' challenged voters list, go to ccnc.me/wematter. Sponsored by: Common Cause North Carolina, NC NAACP, Emancipate NC, NC For The People, Democracy North Carolina, ACLU of North Carolina Why is this race so important? Our state Supreme Court makes crucial decisions about our lives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley used the court's power to stop evictions statewide. In 2023, a different court, led by Chief Justice Paul Newby, used their power to legalize partisan gerrymandering and take away the right to vote from formerly incarcerated North Carolinians.
