Women’s History Month @ QCC (Book Talk with Hugh Ryan)
Hugh Ryan, author of The Women’s House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison (Bold Type Books, 2022), will discuss the major themes and arguments of his most recent and critically acclaimed book. Ryan’s book investigates the history of the Women’s House of Detention, a women’s prison that operated in New York City’s Greenwich Village from the late 1920s through the mid-1970s. As Ryan’s research reveals, vaguely written laws, discriminatory policing, and blatant corruption landed many queer women in the House of Detention, marking it as a significant place in New York City’s LGBTQIA+ history. Ryan will appear virtually in conversation with Dr. Aliza Atik, Associate Professor in the Department of English at Queensborough Community College / CUNY.
