In good times, applying for Unemployment Insurance Benefits is challenging. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s gotten worse. Many of the workers who applied in March and April are still waiting for claims determinations from the SC Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW). They’ve yet to find a job and are already receiving notices to terminate. They’re worried about losing benefits, when they can’t go back to work. They need legal assistance but cannot hire attorneys.
This training will give a comprehensive overview of the UI system, including information about the benefits created by the Family First Recovery Act and CARES. You will receive both training and an updated manual outlining the Unemployment Insurance System.
With your participation in this free legal training, we ask that you give back by agreeing, pro bono, to help an unemployed worker who is facing the challenge of accessing benefits through SCDEW. You will receive a referral of one case from either SC Legal Services or the SC Bar Pro Bono Program.
