Re-Envisioning PLEI: A Workshop with West Coast LEAF
This 90-minute interactive workshop will explore strategies for public legal education and information (PLEI) that align with social justice values and aims. Legal educators, teachers, advocates, frontline service providers, lawyers, and anyone else who facilitates learning about laws and the legal system are welcome to join our interactive discussion. We will touch on the range of potential impacts of PLEI—both liberatory and harmful—and look at wise and ethical practices for PLEI practitioners that were shared by West Coast LEAF’s community as part of our Re-Envisioning Public Legal Education and Information project. Topics will include community-led, learner-engaged, and relationship-centred PLEI; honest and critical perspectives on the law; and dismantling barriers to participation.

The workshop will be facilitated by Cecile Afable (she/her) and Alana Prochuk (she/her/they/them) of West Coast LEAF, a non-profit organization that uses legal strategies to challenge gender-based discrimination and advance equality and justice.

Please note that this session will be run as a meeting, not a webinar. Attendees will be invited to participate in the workshop in whatever way works best for them. There will be opportunities for discussion, but participants will not be put on the spot to speak. Participants may choose to have their cameras on or off and are asked to please keep their microphones muted except when speaking. Lawyers attending this workshop may claim up to 1.5hrs of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) with the Law Society of BC.
