Decentering Skills and Centering Community: Writing in the Classroom
Writing is hard. Teaching it is harder. How do you make writing accessible, intentional, and interesting for your students? Why does it matter anyway? Join Constellation Resident Asia Calcagno as she walks you through the ins and outs of effective writing spaces and talks through how writing connects to social-emotional learning, cross-cultural communication, and a useful tool for identity development. Educators will learn intentional habits they can build into their learning spaces and ways to upkeep a community of writing.

Participants will:

1. Understand how writing programming can be used as a tool to engage in storytelling, cross-cultural communication, and community building
2. Learn best practices to build writing cultures in their classrooms and out-of-school time that are actively safe and effective spaces for young people
3. Adapt inclusive practices into their writing spaces to best encourage young peoples' participation and well-being
4. Develop tangible tools for building a community of writers
