Health Equity Zones: A Framework for Developing and Sustaining Resilient Community Infrastructure

Christopher Ausura, Co-Director of the Health Equity Institute at the Rhode Island Department of Health, will speak about the development of Rhode Island’s Health Equity Zones initiative. The Health Equity Zones initiative uses a braided funding model to collaboratively and equitably invest in defined geographic areas. It aims to develop sustainable infrastructure by aligning a diverse set of resources to support community-identified needs to improve the socioeconomic and environmental conditions driving disparities, community health, and prosperity. The session will consider the program’s organizational principles and structure as well as its impact for Rhode Island communities.

Speaker:
Christopher J. Ausura is the acting Co-Director of the Health Equity Institute at the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH). In his role, Chris leads RIDOH’s efforts to establish and sustain the Health Equity Zone initiative, directs the Preventative Health and Health Services Block and COVID Health Disparities grants, leads RIDOH’s Healthcare Equity team and supports RIDOH’s efforts to improve social and environmental determinants of health with specific focus on the economic, housing and healthcare sectors.
