"Succulent Exploration in South Africa; Riverine Expeditions"
by Ernst van Jaarsveld
Many parts of South Africa are difficult to reach by vehicle or foot. This month’s presentation by South African researcher Ernst van Jaarsveld – long associated with the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town – will focus on the botanical exploration of various rivers by canoes.
Ernst has published monographs on Gasteria, Tylecodon & Cotyledon, and Plectranthus, and is recognized as an expert on Aizoaceae and Aloe among other plant groups. His PhD dissertation on cliff-dwelling succulents is particularly relevant to this talk. Since retiring from Kirstenbosch, he’s taken charge of the conservatory at Babylonstoren, a working farm and tourist oasis.
NOTE: Ernst will be addressing the in-person audience at the San Francisco County Fair Building via Zoom from South Africa.
