It’s Not SEL If It’s Not Equitable: Using Teen-Written Stories About Racism to Reflect on Teacher SEL

In this interactive 90-minute webinar for school leaders and teachers, we will review the equity-minded additions CASEL made to their competencies. These competencies—including examining our own biases and working with others to create change—are vital for teachers seeking to create a more just educational environment. We will read excerpts from stories youth have written, about their own experiences with racism and injustice at school. How do these experiences impact students’ self- perception and academic success, and what role do educators play? Participants will reflect on these new equity-minded competencies and share strategies to strengthen their SEL skills to create the schools and classrooms we all envision.
With special guest:
Dr. Robert J. Jagers, Vice President of Research, CASEL

Dr. Robert J. Jagers is CASEL’s vice president of research. Prior to joining CASEL, he was a faculty member in the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan, a Co-PI of the Center for the Study of Black Youth in Context (CSBYC), and the founding director of Wolverine Pathways, a university-sponsored diversity pipeline program for qualified secondary school students. Among his various CASEL duties, Dr. Jagers is leading work with partner districts to explore how social and emotional learning can be leveraged to promote equitable learning environments and equitable developmental outcomes for students from historically underserved groups. He has a particular interest in participatory approaches to SEL research and practice and their implications for the civic development of children and youth.
