Charity Navigator (CN) empowers millions of donors by providing them with free access to data, tools, and resources to guide philanthropic decision-making. Through our ratings, nonprofits are equipped with the nonprofit sector's premier trust indicator and a powerful platform to raise awareness and funds. In the summer of 2020, the CN team launched the Encompass Ratings System to scale the number of organizations rated (from 9,000 to 170,000) and to deepen the analysis beyond Finance and Accountability & Transparency metrics on which the ratings have been based historically. This deeper analysis includes a 4 domain system which we call beacons. In March 2021, CN released the first version of the Culture & Community beacon focused on metrics related to Constituent Feedback (developed in conjunction with Feedback Labs and other partners).
Description of the Challenge:
The next phase of the work is to launch version 2.0 of its Culture & Community ratings (scheduled to launch in March, 2022). This will include metrics related to non-profits' Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices. CN seeks to be as inclusive as possible. The team is interested in brainstorming with LabStorm participants on how to meaningfully engage a diverse set of people in the feedback process.
1. We know that models already exist for measuring progress on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI). How do we best develop a process for aligning with nonprofit leaders for a DEI without reinventing the wheel?
2. How do we garner feedback on our work from communities we haven't typically engaged within deep ways (particularly Latinx and Indigenous communities)?
3. How should we think about the composition of our listening sessions and expert interviews?
