Social Contagion in Victim Precaution

Abstract : If crime displacement due to visible crime preventive measures is a local phenomenon, then the spread of preventive measures may resemble local outbreaks of an infectious disease. We provide rare evidence of this phenomenon in the case of roll-down shutters, a conspicuous burglary prevention device that is highly popular in some areas but rarely used in other areas. Our results suggest that the strong geographical variation in the use of this preventive measure is driven by social contagion rather than differences in local conditions or preferences.
