Are you skilled in a subject area taught during middle or high school? Do you understand the developmental milestones of younger children? Are you creative? Do you like to help children figure out their homework, guide them through questions and problems, encourage critical thinking, and reach those "aha!" moments? If your answer is "yes" to any of these questions, this volunteer opportunity may be just right for you!
This 2 hour training will focus on child welfare, how children in foster care have unique academic challenges compared to children not in foster care, and how to manage the challenges in the tutor sessions. For safety purposes, we will ask you to take a 30-minute assessment called the Diana Screen - a sexual risk screening tool for individuals who work with children - during the training. All information discovered will remain confidential. Our focus is to protect children and youth.
Consider this opportunity if you can commit to one quarter (3 months) of weekly virtual tutor support of a student in foster care!
Statistically, these students have the lowest academic scores and lowest high school graduation rates of any other group. Why? They are in a point of limbo - with significant uncertainty. Yet, they are capable. Thank you for helping them to see this.
