The Bechdel Group Fall Reading of: Madison Wetzell's "The Body Play"
The absurdity of being embodied. Inspired by the experience of dealing with a chronic autoimmune disease, including navigating a dehumanizing medical system and resistance to the idea of being “disabled.” A singular protagonist is played by two actors, one a detached, neurotic mind, and the other a chaotic, screaming body. The mind submits her body to the scrutiny of experts – doctors, therapists, yoga teachers – and ultimately explores what it might mean to be a body, as opposed to a mind that, regrettably, also has a body.
