Voices from the Holy Land Online Film Salon: "Gaza: Still Alive"
When you think of Gaza, you may think of war and destroyed buildings, of economic hardships, the strangling siege, the high unemployment rate, the poverty and deprivation—but less often do we see the deprivation that is the invisible, unmet needs for psychological support for a population so in need of it. One wonders what is the effect on a Palestinian child’s mind to hold the idea that they’re living in ‘imprisonment’ while the rest of the world’s kids live in freedom. Gaza: Still Alive is not full of images of war planes, bomb craters or other war footage. Rather, the film asks: how has a decade of siege affected people there? How has this affected their mental health and why? And what does this bode for the future? It focuses on the scars and craters inside the ordinary Gazan’s mind.

Register now and join us on January 9 at 3:00 PM Eastern for a discussion of the film with psychiatrist and psychotherapist Dr. Samah Jabr, head of the Mental Health Unit of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, and independent journalist and filmmaker Harry Fear. Our moderator will be Dr. Elizabeth Berger, child psychiatrist and founding/steering committee member of the USA-Palestine Mental Health Network.
