There are multiple ways to enact systems change, at the macro and micro-level. In this interactive workshop, we will explore the macro-level systems and structures that unintentionally can create unsafe learning environments that end up harming LGBTQ+ students. Participants will take a deeper dive into the Michigan State Board of Education’s Statement and Guidance on Creating Safe and Supportive Learning Environments for LGBTQ Students to explore policies and best practices impacting the wellbeing and educational opportunities of LGBTQ+ students. Participants will discuss the importance of getting school staff on the same page when it comes to implementing bullying and harassment policies, curriculum inclusion, media centers, names and pronouns, bathrooms and locker rooms, and working with families of LGBTQ+ students. A foundational understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression is recommended, but not required.
