In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and historic calls for racial justice, companies are grappling with what must be done to dismantle structural racism, eliminate inequities, and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has been on a journey to address the social determinants of health for more than a decade and can serve as an example of how to make a social impact through racial and health equity. Recently, the company has renewed its commitment by:
- creating a racial and health equity plan, and recognizing environmental justice as a factor for better health outcomes,
- collaborating with community groups like Urban Roots to address systemic inequities in the community, and
- while yet far from perfect, working to dismantle inequitable structures within the enterprise.

David Miller, Principal Consultant will share what company leaders and associates have learned, their progress, and the challenges ahead. Hayley Ball, Executive Director, Urban Roots will provide her perspective on what the expanded collaboration with Blue Cross has meant for their work and how it has driven more equitable outcomes.
