“Researching Black Patriots – Connecticut’s Private Soldiers in the Revolutionary War” with Pauline Merrick
Estimates of the number of African American men who were enlisted in the Continental Army or provided support for that army range from five thousand to nine thousand men. This presentation will look at existing service and pension records, and other tools for piecing together the lives of these largely forgotten Patriots. The objective is to learn to navigate military and pension records relating to the Rev. War, to learn how to flesh out the stories of the men who served, and to keep those stories and memories alive.
