This Mindfulness in Schools Project "Inviting the Experts..." free webinar is open to anyone working in schools. This 90 minute session will provide training for all school staff to help them understand the push and pull factors that influence children and young people in becoming avoidant of school, including:
• Definitions and characteristics of anxiety-based school avoidance
• The causes/triggers and maintaining factors of school avoidance, including risk factors specific to the COVID-19 pandemic
• Intervention strategies in use in schools, including evidence-based approaches to support individual children and tools for staff and key workers that work with them.
Delegates will also receive resource packs after the event.
This webinar will be delivered by Dr. Miquela Walsh & Dr. Rhea Powell, Educational Psychologists who work for Kent Educational Psychology Service. As educational psychologists, Miquela & Rhea support children and young people from birth to 25 years old who have a range of emotional and social issues or learning difficulties. They apply psychological theory and research in order to promote the children’s emotional and social wellbeing.
As part of the role, Miquela and Rhea frequently deliver supervision, training and professional development opportunities to school staff and other services. This ABSA webinar was developed for Kent schools and services as part of a free suite of School Recovery Training materials in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and it has, to date, been delivered to over 500 school staff and other services.
Miquela and Rhea also research and advise on systemic educational and social change and policies such as inclusion practices.
