Banning Foreign Involvement in Maine Referendums?
Bills LD 194 & 479 are soon to be considered by the Maine Legislature and would ban foreign involvement in Maine’s referendum elections. Do these bills prohibit the free flow of information and ideas and violate our First Amendment rights, or is prohibiting foreign influence in any part of our election process paramount and a sensible extension of federal precedent and existing case law? You be the judge! At this brown-bag dialogue two attorneys well-versed in these bills, Timothy Woodcock and John Brautigam, will discuss the merits and First Amendment implications of both points of view. The session will be moderated by Jonathan Piper, Of Counsel at PretiFlaherty, LLP. Bring your lunch and your questions to this free Zoom event.
