In this virtual demo, Steve Chmilar will introduce some key principles necessary to create the illusion of reality in painting. Remember that without light, you see nothing, and so the key to making a painting look realistic is to understand light. You will look at the difference between light sources and reflected light, and their effects on different surfaces and materials. Similar to (and just as important) practicing scales for a pianist or paradiddles for a drummer, Steve will demonstrate quick examples that anyone can paint alla prima (wet on wet in one session). Put in other terms, these fundamental exercises can be considered the “rudiments of realism”.
