Join PRKN staff and special guest, Katie Register, with Clean Virginia Waterways of Longwood University, to discuss plastic pollution in Virginia’s waterways and how our Potomac Riverkeeper is working to combat it.
This Water Wednesday will focus on discussing the 2021-2025 Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan, an updated plan with strategic, definitive actions to reduce debris in Virginia’s coastal waterways and the Atlantic Ocean. Harmful sources of plastic pollution are still too common along Virginia’s shorelines and become marine debris that ultimately flows into the ocean—including bottles, balloons, plastic bags, cigarette butts, and food containers. Katie Register, Executive Director of Clean Virginia Waterways of Longwood University, who worked closely with the Department of Environmental Quality to develop this plan will discuss their findings and how to change the behaviors that often cause litter.
Plus, Dean Naujoks, Potomac Riverkeeper, and Serena Moncion, Outreach Coordinator will discuss how Potomac Riverkeeper Network is working to combat plastic pollution in the Potomac River. We’ll also be discussing ways you can get involved, including trash cleanups on the Potomac, and a new youth coalition dedicated to reducing plastic pollution.
