How Systems Lead to the Provision of Power, Privilege, and Oppression in the Interpreting Profession

You are invited to join us for this thought-provoking workshop with Alesia Allen, PhD., Assistant Vice President of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) on Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus. Dr. Allen has more than 15 years of professional, clinical, and teaching experience and she worked on several initiatives to promote system changes that impact deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals who come from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Allen holds a doctoral and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Gallaudet University and a bachelor’s in psychology from RIT.

Topics to be covered include: How human systems (macro, meso, and micro) can be discriminatory and exclusive. Defining systemic oppression as it relates to marginalized communities and intersectional identities. Historical and societal factors (racism, sexism, ableism, audism) that impact system design. The impact of individual power and privilege. Existing systems within the interpreting community and how they impact interpreting work. Examining how discriminatory systems impact an interpreter’s individual work.

***The registration fee for this workshop is $25 for the general interpreting community, and free to interpreters on Vancro Integrated Interpreting Services roster. This workshop will be presented in ASL, without English interpretation. It has been approved for .15 RID CEUs at the "little to no" content knowledge level.
