Discord and Dissent: Belarus and the Struggle for Democracy
It has been one year since a pro-democratic movement erupted across Belarus against president and dictator, Alyaksandr Lukashenka after claims of fraud in the 2020 Belarusian election. Since then, Lukashenka has made international headlines for using pretext to force the landing in Minsk of an international flight to arrest a Belarusian opposition journalist, illustrating the degree to which he is willing to go to quash dissent. What is the status of protests in Belarus and what role does Russian President and Lukashenka-supporter Vladimir Putin play? Join us for our member-only discussion on Thursday, November 4th, with Hanna Liubakova, journalist, non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council and recipient of the Peter Caws Prize, to learn the inside story, the current situation on the ground, and more.
