DIY ADA Access Planning
Complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act can feel daunting if you’re just starting out. So many checklists to consult! So many webinars to attend! So little buy-in at the top of the organization! But it only takes a little time, training, and creativity to get started on this journey. Scott Artley, Accessibility Program Director for the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, developed a do-it-yourself approach to ADA planning that works for large and small cultural organizations, whether you’re just beginning to center inclusion for people with disabilities or ready to level-up your efforts. In this session participants will get an introduction to the DIY ADA Access Planning workbook, a tool that kickstarts the process of developing an ADA Access Plan right-fitted for your organization.

In the first hour of the workshop you’ll get a brief introduction to the ADA guidelines and identify some common access strategies. The last half hour is devoted to getting you started: learn how to conduct an accessibility audit and begin building your ADA Access Plan using tools we provide. This workshop will be most useful if you bring at least one other person from your organization, but even if you’re flying solo you’ll get a head start on developing a plan and gain valuable tools to bring back to your collaborators.

Scott Artley is MRAC's first Accessibility Program Director, a role designed to develop and oversee accessibility grant programs for arts organizations in the Twin Cities, and to develop resources targeted to artists with disabilities and organizations serving artists/audiences with disabilities. Scott has over a decade of leadership experience in the arts, with a special focus on community-based initiatives and disability justice, emerging (in part) from his own experience as a queer person with disabilities.

Live closed captioning will be available during the webinar. Please contact accessibility@maaa.org if you need any additional accommodations.
