Dr. Hilary Green, Associate Professor of History, Department of Gender and Race Studies, University of Alabama will discuss "Veterans, Comrades, and Leaders: African American Civil War Veterans in Northeastern North Carolina" on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 2 pm via Zoom. Dr. Green offers an overview of the ways that African American veterans of the Civil War leveraged their Civil War service through parades, participation in the Grand Army of the Republic and other activities. These men contributed to the various ways in which African American understandings of the Civil War persisted into the twentieth century. Dr. Green has written numerous articles, books, and is a co-editor with J. Brent Morris of the "Reconstruction Reconsidered" series through the University of South Carolina Press. She is also active with "The Hallowed Grounds Project" at the University of Alabama.
