Chiaroscuro Essentials Webinar
THERE WILL BE A RANDOM GIVEAWAY DURING THIS WEBINAR!
ONE ATTENDEE WILL RECEIVE A ERIC JOHNSON LIMITED EDITION BRUSH SET AND A GOTHIC PANEL OF YOUR CHOICE.

Chiaroscuro, (from Italian chiaro, “light,” and scuro, “dark”) is a term employed by the artist to represent the dramatic relationship of light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects.
In this 6 hour online webinar, Pro Team Artist, Eric Johnson will show the entire creation process on a chiaroscuro focused still- life painting from beginning to end in oil paint using a direct painting method called alla prima on a Gothic Arch Floater Panel. This will include many talks about materials like pigments, oils and surfaces as well as full elaboration of underpainting, overpainting, impasto and glazing. There will also be a strong emphasis on painting in an archival manner to ensure that the paintings will age well against the test of time.

There will also be a traditional sgraffito demo to teach how you can give your floater panels a high end framed look. Sgraffito decoration on frames first became popular during the Italian Renaissance, but it is still prevalent today. Sgraffito, which means "to scratch," involves painting egg tempera over the surface of a burnished water-gilded frame. As the thinly applied paint dries (or becomes "leather hard"), it is skillfully scratched off with a sharp wooden stylus, revealing bright gold lines and a "thread" of underlying brilliance underneath. This mimicked rich, embroidered fabrics that were among the most valuable commodities of the time.
