Cake Decorating Supplies List

Two 8- or 9-inch round yellow (see recipe below) or white cake layers (or chocolate if that’s all you have). Or one layer cut in half horizontally.
8 ounces (two sticks) butter (preferable) or margarine. If margarine, try to find one that is not too yellow.
10 ounces (about 2 ½ cups) confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Small amount of milk to thin the icing if necessary
Chocolate sprinkles, sweetened flaked coconut, chocolate wafers or Oreos (creme removed), vanilla wafers, or stale cake (for the sides of the cake). If using cookies or cake, crumble or grind them in a food processor to pieces about the size of a chocolate sprinkle. You don’t want the crumbs to be too fine.
Red jam, such as raspberry or plum, not expensive grade, which has too much fruit
3-4 tablespoons orange liqueur (optional)
Food coloring, paste (preferable) or liquid
Wax paper
Parchment paper, if you have it. If not, wax paper will do.
Sieve or sifter
Rubber spatula/scraper
Straight, narrow metal spatula or palette knife
Handi-wipes or paper towels
Small scissors
Decorating tips, if you have them: star tip and petal tip (looks like a teardrop). These are sold by Ateco and Wilton. If not, we’ll improvise
Electric mixer and mixing bowl
Turntable, if you have one.
Flat plate or cake board
