May is Asian Heritage Month and your support is needed now in the worker-led fight to end racist bylaws killing Asian massage businesses and probating workers from making a living in the Town of Newmarket.
Asian massage businesses are currently being shut down and workers locked out due to a harmful bylaw that requires all businesses that offer alternative massage to obtain a Personal Wellness Establishment (PWE) licence. Racism and an anti-sex work agenda have fuelled the introduction and enforcement of this bylaw. In April 2022, the Town of Newmarket forced many Asian massage businesses to cease operations because none of the Asan women workers were able to obtain the appropriate license. We must take action now!
Join Butterfly, CCNCTO, HIV Legal Network, SURJ Toronto and allied community partners on May 9th from Noon to 1 pm to hear organizers at the frontline of this organizing and learn more about why this urgent is important for all residents of Ontario to be mobilizing around! We will then take collective action and advocate with workers by calling, emailing, and tweeting at members of the Town of Newmarket to organize with workers and echo their demands to end systemic racism in the Council, repeal harmful bylaws and racist enforcement, and allow Asian workers in massage businesses the right to work.
HOW DOES A PHONE/EMAIL ZAP WORK?
You’ll need a computer to participate in this zap (+ a phone if you are planning to make phone calls). You’ll join us by Zoom to learn more about the issues impacting workers in Newmarket, followed by a quick zap training - we’ll give you all the tools (contact info, scripts/templates, sample tweets, etc) you need! We’ll then collectively make calls & send emails for the remaining time. At the end, we’ll debrief & share the next steps to keep up the pressure!
