SURJ Boston's monthly brunches are a time to build community and deepen our understanding. Each month has a topic and featured presenters in an area related to racial justice organizing.
SURJB is a chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice, a national organization dedicated to organizing white people against white supremacy in all its forms. Thus, our audience tends to be primarily white - and everyone is welcome to this space. We will work to ensure the comfort and safety of BIPOC who join our space.
all events now offer captioning through rev.com, live embedded captioning.
August 2021 Brunch Theme:
Our friend and cousin of SURJB (now) Dr. Bret McEvoy will be presenting his dissertation called WHITE RECKONINGS: The possibilities for transformative justice contributions from anti-racist white activists in the United States. Having interviewed over 30 activists from Greater Boston, Bret will discuss his findings and lead us into a conversation around how this can help us better situate our work as white anti-racist activists
Bret's dissertation and work on the Ear to the Ground project engaged SURJB and CCI leaders at a moment of upheaval immediately after Trump's election and in the midst of restructuring SURJB. Hearing from him now as the COVID19 pandemic and #BlackLivesMatter uprisings have stoked a new wave of white people entering racial justice work will be a helpful moment of reflection and digestion for newer (and veteran) SURJB members and CCI community members.
This event will be a low key fundraiser for Community Change Inc which grounds SURJB in over 50 years of anti racist organizing history. Contribute as you are able here: bit.ly/SURJ2CCI
