Pre-Civil War Quilts: Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad
RVDL welcomes our 2021 Illinois Humanities Road Scholar, Connie Martin! Join us to hear the story of Connie’s family, and the secrecy, codes, and fugitive slave escape routes which were revealed in her family Bible dated 1865. We’ll also learn about the origins of the underground railroad, abolitionists, slave routes passing through Illinois, and the quilt codes used to navigate the underground railroad with replicas made by Connie’s mother!
