Having grown up among the Chinese people and mastered both the Chinese and English languages, Pearl Buck thoroughly understood the eastern and western cultures and clearly saw the conflict and the possible way for reconciliation. She portrayed Chinese peasants for the first time in literature and changed the distorted image of the Chinese people in the western mind. Her biographies of her missionary parents illustrate why Christian Mission failed in China as well as what achievements it made. Her novel "Peony" about a Jewish family in Kaifeng, a metropolitan city in the heart of China, demonstrates the Jews' assimilation into the Chinese race and culture, an unprecedented phenomenon in the world. Dr. Kang Liao is going to give a presentation on Pearl Buck's role as a multicultural mediator that hopefully may shed some light on the worsening tendency of clash of civilizations.
