AWARE-LA Workshop: Understanding White Supremacy as a System & Culture

* In this 90-minute workshop, we will be talking about white supremacy as a system of oppression, and we’ll explore the ways in which that system informs our culture. We will investigate some of the specific characteristics of white supremacy culture, and discuss how we see this culture showing up in ourselves and in our jobs, organizations, or communities. We’ll also imagine possible antidotes to these harmful characteristics we can apply in order to create a new culture and new ways of being in relationship and in community.

* AWARE-LA is, generally speaking, a white space. Our approach is self-focused; it is for those who are interested in working on themselves and their own privilege. We do welcome everyone, however, we acknowledge that this space is one where white people are unlearning racism and discovering the ways we uphold white supremacy. We gather as a white anti-racist community so that Black people, Indigenous peoples, and People of Color do not have to bear the burden of educating us. It is also a space for white people to stumble and make mistakes, without subjecting Black people, Indigenous peoples, and People of Color to further undue trauma. Just to reiterate, if you are a person of color or a Black person in this meeting, you are welcome. We just want to be transparent about the space.
