Explore: Our Roots of Identity, Privilege, and Racism
Every Wednesday in February from 6 PM to 7:30
We are excited to bring this 4 week-series to our community at no cost. In it, we will be exploring the roots of our identity, privilege and racism. This series will challenge us to reflect and evaluate our views, attitudes, and actions toward marginalized communities. We will explore structures of systemic racism, racial injustice and white supremacy.
Using the yamas/niyamas (fundamental yoga principles) as a foundation, we will learn the true meaning of living yoga off the mat; opening our mind and heart to all beings, and showing up in the world--a higher version of ourselves!
This class will be taught by Shannon Taylor and Tierra Barber - two kind, wise and wonderful human beings, as well as fabulous yoga and urban zen instructors. They have created a brave and safe space for honest, hard conversations and self-reflection.
The class consists of:
- (4) 1.5 hours sessions
(- 4) 20-30 minute yoga/grounding videos to help us pause and check in with our body, heart and intentions.
Throughout this series we will explore breath, asana, restorative postures, and contemplative journaling as a compliment to experiential learning and group discussions geared to:
- Look at experiences that have shaped our mentality.
- Investigate hidden biases and how they affect the way we interact with others.
- Engage in respectful and constructive dialogue on building a more inclusive community
- Create actionable steps towards being an effective co-liberator in everyday life
Sarah, our Executive Director, and Sharon, our Board Vice-President, participated in this series this summer. It was humbling and challenged them to sit in discomfort, and it was eye-opening and thought provoking. They grew in ways they did not expect and believe they are better human beings for taking it.
We hope you will join us!
