Description
Join us as we kick off this year’s Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action with a special online forum on February 3, 2025, at 4pm Pacific (7pm Eastern). This date marks the 61st anniversary of the 1964 New York City school boycott — probably the largest protest of the civil rights era. On that historic day, hundreds of thousands of youth, supported by parents, educators, and community leaders, boycotted school to demand an end to segregation, systemic racism, and inequitable education. Their courageous action, led by Black youth, sparked a wave of similar actions across the country, demonstrating the power of intergenerational solidarity in the fight for justice. This forum will feature Brian Jones, activist, educator, and author of The Tuskegee Student Uprising, who will illuminate the history and significance of the 1964 boycott. We will also spotlight youth leaders engaged in today’s ongoing struggles for educational justice, drawing powerful connections between past and present movements and inspiring the next generation of change-makers. We hope this forum will spark discussion about launching new youth organizing initiatives today, supported by the same spirit of intergenerational solidarity that powered the 1964 boycott. Don’t miss this opportunity to reflect, learn, and organize as we continue the fight for equity, justice, and liberation in education. Let’s honor the legacy of those who paved the way and empower youth voices leading the charge today.
