The LAB of the Spanish Embassy (the Spain Arts and Science LAB in Belgium) opens the exhibition "The Studio in the Mirror", by Madrid-born Gadea Burgaz.
It is a work in progress and a work in transition between two artistic residencies: that of WIELS in Brussels and that of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome.
In May 2020, Spanish architect Gadea Burgaz was unanimously selected by the jury for a 6-month artist residency at the WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels through the residency programme of Acción Cultural Española, in collaboration with the Cultural and Scientific Council of the Spanish Embassy in Belgium. The jury highlighted her "passion and conviction", as well as "the potential offered by her diverse and varied artistic practice".
From July to December 2020, WIELS provided Gadea with a multidisciplinary working environment and gave her the opportunity to immerse herself in the artistic and cultural life of Brussels and to participate in current debates and research on contemporary art practices. Eight months later, the artist embarked on her journey to Rome to continue her work through the scholarship programme of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome. Now, the Cultural and Scientific Service of the Embassy of Spain in Belgium is taking up this transition with the recreation of her WIELS studio in her transit to Rome: the work in transition of a textile collection created for sculptures that she herself makes.
