George Saunders in Conversation with Audrey Niffenegger
Join us for a virtual conversation between internationally acclaimed authors George Saunders and Audrey Niffenegger about George’s newest book—just released in paperback--A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life. Awarded the 2017 Man Booker Prize for best work of fiction in English for his novel Lincoln in the Bardo, Saunders has been teaching a class on the Russian short story to his MFA students at Syracuse University for the past 20 years. In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years.

Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it’s more relevant than ever in these turbulent times.

This event is co-sponsored by The Chicagoland Independent Bookstore Association (ChIBA) and the Great Lakes Independent Bookstore Association, in conjunction with national Independent Bookstore Day (April 30). Participating bookstores include: The Book Cellar, Bookends & Beginnings, Bookies, Bucket o' Blood, Madison Street Books, Seminary Co-op, Unabridged Books, Volumes, Women & Children First
