RESTART-DCM Treatment for Pre-School Children Who Stutter: An Introduction

Description: This presentation will introduce attendees to the Demands and Capacities indirect treatment approach for preschool children who stutter. The Demands and Capacities Model-based treatment was designed in the US in the 1980s and also introduced in Europe. In 2015, after the publication of the RESTART trial, the RESTART-Demands and Capacities Model-based treatment Method was published ( This presentation will guide attendees through the model and an overview of research findings.

Bio: Marie-Christine Franken works as a Research Lead at the Speech & Hearing Centre of Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Dr. Franken graduated with a degree in Linguistics and is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Fluency Expert. Her Ph.D. dissertation (1997) was title, “Evaluation of Stuttering Therapy.” Marie-Christine has always worked as a clinical researcher in the field of speech disorders, focusing on stuttering. She was the co-Principal Investigator of the RESTART trial, comparing RESTART-DCM treatment and the Lidcombe Program. Since 2015, she has taught the RESTART-DCM based treatment approach internationally.
