From sectoral transition to systemic transformation: Guiding just transition(s) from carbon intensive & dependent regions towards inclusive, prosperous & resilient economies, communities & societies
The Just Transition is a well-recognised concept promoted initially by trade-unions - and now by policy-makers and NGOs - as a means of reconciling the climate and environmental policies with socio-economic goals. From the beginning, social goals and environmental goals are portrayed as inherently in conflict, while the concept itself is embedded in a market-based approach to society. The current understanding of the Just Transition struggles to apply to different situations and contexts, in spite of the implications for social justice from a gender, international and intergenerational perspective. It is not readily applicable to addressing existing social inequalities which manifest outside of the locality, actor or sector specifically targeted.
In this workshop we will exchange about just transition experiences from various regions, with a focus on governance; discussing how to move from sectoral or regional approaches towards a systemic perspective: from Just Transition to Just Transformation. The Just Transformation is a vision for how we can achieve the societal shift needed to reach our social and environmental goals put forward in a recent statement led by CAN Europe. We hope to develop a flipchart of ideas to feed existing coalition work on just transition and just transformation.
The format of the session will be first an introductory and inspiring presentation on the challenges and opportunities of the Just Transition(s) followed by a panel discussion (in plenary and thematic break-out rooms on Gender inclusiveness, Youth and Intergenerational justice & social and ecological inter-leakages) with invited participants from different sectors and countries.
Event co-organised by CAN-E, eco-union, GCF & WWF under the Transformations 2021 Conference
