Porchlight Music Theatre’s next Movie Musical Monday discussion is on the 1962 American musical comedy-drama film "Gypsy," produced and directed by Mervyn LeRoy with a screenplay by Leonard Spigelgass. Based on the book of the 1959 stage musical “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” by Arthur Laurents, featuring music by Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne, which was adapted from the 1957 autobiography “Gypsy: A Memoir” by Gypsy Rose Lee, Monday, April 19 at 7 PM CT on Zoom!
The “Gypsy” discussion is led by host Rosie Schultz (chair, Porchlight Young Professionals) and special guest Sophie Grimm (Porchlight by Request; Rose in “Gypsy” in Maine)
In “Gypsy,” Rose Hovick (Rosalind Russell) pushes her two young daughters into the entertainment industry, traveling and promoting them with minimal success. After years in the business, younger daughter June quits and elopes, leaving Rose searching for work for her other, less talented daughter, Louise (Natalie Wood). The only offer is at a burlesque house, but Louise takes to it and transforms herself into the popular Gypsy Rose Lee. As Louise gains notoriety, she grows tired of her mother's influence.
