Q: Why is all this still available on the public web then? Is anyone 'policing'? I wouldn't trust to search on an email address in case that info is also getting collected?

Hi Hana, John Clarke from the Gallagher Cyber Risk Management team here. When data breaches occur at companies and plaintext usernames and passwords are stolen, hackers will generally post what they have found in many hundreds of different locations. This ensures that the data leaked is extremely difficult (near impossible) to erase from the internet. The sites we use are vital to security operations, as many people use the same password for multiple accounts. If its known that password has been leaked, it can be a flag to change your password as soon as possible!

The company I work for suffered a ransomeware attack. fortunately we had backups so we avoided the ransom - nevertheless it took several months to recover fully and we now have a drastically different suite of IT policies

Also make sure unused modems are disconnected, all unused ports on ethernet switches are disabled, establish defense in depth using secure zones & conduits, use firewalls and VPN authentication....and make sure you apply automation manufacurers' security patches
