precise definitions vary, but it's essentially the writings/study about the end of time.

So in this case, the "time" that is ending is one in which systematic oppression of peoples is an accepted given.

When Prog. Xy. looks out the church window today, we see:1. wealth inequalities at an all-time high2. social dislocations due to capitalism3. social dislocations due to climate crisis4. widespread disenfranchisementI would add:-Specific disenfranchisement related to race and the unhealed history of racial subjugation.-LGBT+ communities still not having full societal inclusion (or legal protections).-Societal and labor gap in how people of all genders are treated and legally protected.-Continued marginalization of most people groups in America and beyond.

Ecofeminist theologian Sallie McFague famously wrote that the Earth is God's body.

I'm afraid I'm not well and fading. Just want to remind everyone of the opportunity to discuss where we are as a congregation, where we have been, and where we hope to go. THIS TH October 1• Listening Sessions-Our excitement to welcome the Rev. Jessica Petersen-Mutai to our community in just a short month is great. In anticipation of her arrival, we have been coordinating with our ABC/UCC ministers to host listening sessions with interested congregation members. The aim of these short sessions is for us to look toward the future and help set Pastor Jessica up for a successful start. A joint ABC/UCC team will offer two group listening sessions through zoom where they will break us out into smaller simultaneous discussion groups. The facilitators will listen for our hopes and dreams, but also allow us space to explore any areas that may need to be addressed as our new journey begins Below are the two session dates/times. We ask that you register for the session you wish to attend

I generally say the 1880s. Post Civil War Reconstruction period for the earliest roots. It got a huge kick start from with the Social Gospel Movement (generously dated 1870-1920s).

01:30:48
so who were those first progressives? did they fall in certain groups like Mennonites or Quakers or..?
Derek R. (he/him)
01:33:36
Great question! Some Quakers, lots of abolitionists, suffragettes. I seem to remember that some Methodists were huge in the Social Gospel era.Would we call them "progressive" today? Maybe, maybe not. But they are forerunners.
Derek R. (he/him)
01:36:38
Just looking at my denomination, the UCC, we have some congregations that are theologically quite conservative, and others that are quite progressive theologically. And everything in between.(Keeping in mind, some researchers don't consider the UCC as part of the Mainline.)
