Yes! The energy at the 2021 convention is what inspired me to get involved!

So well said, Bob!

Well said Elizabeth! #WeAreSHAPEAmerica 🙌

I so appreciate your honesty and candor, Cara.
Lisa Paulson
43:04
Very well said, Bob. Council reps are definitely do-ers! Apply to serve on a council if you have strong attention to detail, critical thinking skills, dedication, and are motivated to contribute in meaningful ways.

many collaborate even after they rotate off!
Stephanie Morris
44:45
Thank you, Cara. And for everyone listening, I think it's important to share that we often hear that from potential candidates - that fear of "this is not for me...I'm not qualified like that." That is not true - you have something to contribute if you are passionate about HPE and you are ready to champion SHAPE America's mission!
Dr. Bob Knipe (he,his,him)
45:34
We will be moving to the next question after Victor Ramsey/s response
Kymm Ballard (she/her(s)
46:01
Right Stephanie, or they think they have nothing to bring! But you DO!! You do because you are you and there is not another one of you! :-) You bring your experience and perspective to share.
Stephanie Morris
47:14
Thank you for that thoughtfulness, Victor!
Dr. Bob Knipe (he,his,him)
48:05
Victor Ramsey shares "You don't need a title to be a leader"

I worked with Victor 18 years ago in NYC and he leads in so many ways. Great work VR.
Dr. Bob Knipe (he,his,him)
55:14
Any of the council chairs want to share out?
Victor Ramsey
55:36
Indeed Eric. Always nice learning and sharing with you my friend.
Lisa Paulson
56:33
YES Holly. Just ask!

is one of the ways I first started getting involved
Stephanie Morris
57:00
Yes, Bob! And the SIGs. And love everything Holly is sharing right now!
Stephanie Morris
57:26
It often takes 3 years for applicants to get onto a Council because it can be a selective process, depending on the year. But don't give up and get involved - reach out to the chairs!
Kymm Ballard (she/her(s)
57:51
Hit it on the head Holly!! AND there are other ways to be involved with SHAPE America like volunteering at SHAPE Seattle!
Heather Burd
58:24
how do we reach out? if we are fairly new to being involved?
Terri Drain
58:27
Also think about getting involved as a leader in your District

For the Health Ed Council, we meet once per month, and each of the members also has a commitment to a task force or project. Those are determined as a Council at our yearly planning process and yearly commitment for our Council's work.
Dr. Cara Grant (she/her/hers)
01:12:01
It was a past president of my state affiliate that "Coached" me up and encouraged me to move forward with applying for the Board.
Eric Stern
01:12:06
What are some of the intangible qualities that you look for in a candidate for the EC or as a board member? Such as serving on the state SHAPE boards, attending the national conference, possibly participating in Speak Out Day, presented at nation/state conferences etc?
Kymm Ballard (she/her(s)
01:12:15
We also have the Leadership Conversation Continued with SHAPE leaders (Stephanie?)
Lisa Paulson
01:12:16
I am most proud of the PA Council and task-force for not only revising and the position statement "Physical Activity as Punishment and/or Behavior Mgt" (December, 2021), but for continuing the conversations to ADVOCATE for how we can do better when it comes to administering exercise and/or withholding physical activity as punishment 🙌 https://www.shapeamerica.org/advocacy/positionstatements/pa/?hkey=205f5d8e-98b2-4cc4-9018-c203549b4714#:~:text=SHAPE%20America%20asserts%20the%20position,activity%20as%20punishment%20is%20inappropriate.
Guy Danhoff
01:12:40
Can someone serve on their state board as well as SHAPE America Board?
Dr. Cara Grant (she/her/hers)
01:13:09
HI @Guy. I sit on the Board national and state board too.
Stephanie Morris
01:13:47
Yes - Cara and Kymm both serve on their state board.
Victor Ramsey
01:14:11
I also sit on my state BOD (NYS)
Cathy Moffitt
01:14:13
Is the LCC for everyone? Unfortunately I think people do not consider themselves leaders.
Stephanie Morris
01:15:06
The LCC (Leadership Conversations Continued for those who are less familiar) are for state leaders (EDs, members of state affiliate boards) and members of SHAPE America's volunteer community (District leaders, Council members, etc)
Elizabeth Sharp
01:15:59
@Eric, great question. When reviewing candidates, we like to see some involvement at any level, but it is not required. However, the more involvement will usually translate to knowing more about the organization and thus will be a stronger voice.
Stephanie Morris
01:16:02
The LCCs are essentially monthly virtual meetings for opportunities to network, share out, receive professional and leadership development, and hear from relevant groups.
Robin Richardson
01:16:24
I serve on my EC for my state affiliate- KYSHAPE
Stephanie Morris
01:16:38
Yes! My apologies, Robin - should have mentioned you also!
Terri Drain
01:17:06
Serving on both is fine. If there’s ever a conflict of interest you may have to recuse yourself from voting. The other thing is to make sure is that you have the time.
Stephanie Morris
01:17:18
Excellent points, Terri. Thank you.
Heather Burd
01:18:35
do you have best ways to connect to board members? if we don't " know " the right people? lol!
Stephanie Morris
