Addie Lentzner

Addie Lentzner
11:16
^^^
Maria Ortega
11:23
Emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
Kelsey Notwick
12:23
Yeah sometimes we forget that when we are busy and not thinking about our mental health
Addie Lentzner
13:07
It’s easy to forget about mental health so sometimes we need to purposefully think about it
Kelsey Notwick
13:13
Yes
Kelsey Notwick
13:28
Yeah there is too much worry around judgement. I agree!
EDiT
13:43
Having the support and resources within and without to be able to sit with and experience the my natural range of emotions and not let my thoughts hijack me and spiral me into hopelessness
Kelsey Notwick
13:47
Exactly!
aero 2
14:05
It’s easy to get task oriented and to ignore signals of stress , etc.
Kelsey Notwick
14:17
Yes
aero 2
15:11
That’s a good point to know yourself is important
Kelsey Notwick
15:28
I agree, Jerry! In school and in life we are forced to do too many things we do not want to. People want us to try everything which we should but there should be more flexibility
aero 2
15:28
We all have different lenses we see the world through
Addie Lentzner
16:09
I think our experiences and privilege also direct our mental health and ability to know for ourselves
Kelsey Notwick
16:17
I totally agree
EDiT
16:30
+1 Addie
Kelsey Notwick
16:48
Yeah people doubt themselves too much
Kelsey Notwick
17:08
They just need to try things and it does not hurt
Kelsey Notwick
17:16
Yaaas girl!!!!
Maria Ortega
17:41
Great points
aero 2
18:15
Also access to support services
EDiT
19:12
being busy (workaholism) can also be a coping mechanism that can look healthy but may not be
Maria Ortega
19:56
So true EDIT !
aero 2
19:59
True Sierra
aero 2
20:13
It’s easy to ignore signals
Kelsey Notwick
20:38
Yeah I definitely work too much and do not take enough time for myself. Sometimes I feel better if I get everything done even when I know I should take a break
Addie Lentzner
23:01
There is a direct correlation w teen depression and social media
Maria Ortega
23:04
Taking break for ourselves is very Important as well sometimes I feel like we shouldn’t or don’t have to because we feel guilty to take breaks. But showing gratitude to ourselves like to others is crucial.
Kelsey Notwick
23:22
Yes we definitely need to do more of that
Addie Lentzner
23:39
Tech designers have admitted that social media platforms are designed to be addictive and need to be changed to support teen mental health
aero 2
23:54
Even 5 minutes outdoors can have positive impacts
Kelsey Notwick
24:10
Yeah I definitely do not spend enough time outside
aero 2
24:10
Very true Addie
Jason
24:27
my internet connection is poor, I'm going to try and reconnect
Kelsey Notwick
25:43
Yeah there are definitely positive aspects of social media but they become forgotten when there are issues
aero 2
26:14
I am working on that Jerry
aero 2
27:03
Very true Nefeli
aero 2
27:16
Connection is important some people connect via social media
aero 2
27:27
And find inspiration
GECF
27:43
social media is coin , it has two sides
Kelsey Notwick
27:55
Yeah if you follow the right people it can really be a positive thing. I have connected to so many people from school and other things through social media. It is ashame there are issues with people not being nice and causing the negative aspects to be present
aero 2
28:33
Great point Kelsey
Maria Ortega
28:55
Yes ! Using social media to improve and to be positive instead of the opposite.
Kelsey Notwick
29:19
Yeah black lives matter, voting, lgbtq+ awareness, etc. can be expressed through social media can be positive, but obviously there is always someone who has to ruin it for everyone
aero 2
29:38
😃
aero 2
31:35
App called Headspace is great for mental health
Kelsey Notwick
31:46
I agree! There are definitely people who promote positive mental health but some do not
aero 2
31:54
It’s not social media
EDiT
31:55
some friends are working on this : https://junto.foundation/
aero 2
32:23
That’s great !!1
Kelsey Notwick
32:50
I like headspace but you have to pay for a lot of it
Kelsey Notwick
33:08
Yeah I wish the whole thing was free
Braescu Miruna
33:31
Do you think there is a difference between the fake lives which social media presents and the ones TV or good old gossip presents?
Addie Lentzner
33:46
https://conversations4change.weebly.com here’s another one
Maria Ortega
33:48
There are also many you tube videos on meditation and free apps !
Kelsey Notwick
34:08
Yeah I have heard about Calm also but I think you have to pay for the entire thing
aero 2
34:31
It’s a tool
aero 2
37:34
It’s how you use the tool
aero 2
38:47
Gabriel has his hand up
aero 2
41:28
We don’t know what’s coming first thing is to know yourself, what works for us as individuals
EDiT
41:41
is any question is too radical?
Addie Lentzner
41:55
No such thing as too radical
EDiT
41:59
;)
aero 2
42:10
I think that’s impossible to predict
Kelsey Notwick
42:42
I think anything is possible if you get the support and have the determination
Kelsey Notwick
43:59
It is definitely possible but I think it is good in small amounts
Kelsey Notwick
44:39
It is important for social connection and news, but the amount of time on it can be reduced and people need to be more aware that they need to be nice even when they are behind a screen
Phil
45:15
I agree with Gabriel; the larger question is about the role of education systems in maintaining a sustainable world - a world that is under threat due to the negative impacts of social media; from a mental health and misinformation perspective.
Kelsey Notwick
47:26
Yeah school is important but I agree things like home life and extracurriculars can shape a person and how they act and view school
Kelsey Notwick
48:18
Yeah and obviously the pandemic did not help since we could not see people and were stuck at home
Kelsey Notwick
49:04
Yes I try to explain that to my parents
EDiT
49:13
Are we doing jump in or hand raising?
Maria Ortega
50:06
I think we were doing hand :)
Phil
50:08
Adults now need to learn from youth as much as youth need to learn from adults
aero 2
50:11
We have to validate people’s experiences
Kelsey Notwick
50:12
They think they understand that when they don't and they try to compare things to their time when it was so different
aero 2
50:36
What’s a big deal to you is a big deal that’s it
Kelsey Notwick
50:40
They say you need to deal with it because they did even when times are different
Kelsey Notwick
50:50
Yes
Johanna Foulk
52:40
Another way I feel like social media can damage people’s mental health is just how fast paced it is - it’s showing people that they have to be on top of everything, know everything about everyone’s lives at all times, and that really does keep people from taking breaks - because what if you log off of social media for a while and miss something? It does feel a lot of the time like if you miss one thing, everyone will just move on and forget about you at all, whether that’s really true or not. And I think that’s really hard for people who didn’t grow up using social media to get.
nefeli valerie
53:13
I would also love to talk about the good thing media has done
nefeli valerie
53:21
I have dikio many examples
Kelsey Notwick
53:22
I agree
nefeli valerie
53:35
So*
aero 2
54:08
What’s a big deal to you is a big deal
aero 2
54:20
We all have our own lenses
Kelsey Notwick
54:42
Yes we cannot downplay the experiences of others because we never know what everyone is going through
aero 2
54:48
Low levels of anxiety
aero 2
55:05
Are natural it’s when you feel you can’t manage it
aero 2
55:16
Great Maria !!
EDiT
55:17
how do we create space for honest “How are you?s”
Kelsey Notwick
55:22
And something that is a big deal to someone may not be for another and we should just be happy for people
aero 2
55:35
Yes Hasini !!
Kelsey Notwick
55:43
and know that everyone is on a different path
Sigrid Perez
56:10
And have different coping mechanisms
aero 2
56:12
Yes Kelsey
aero 2
56:22
Yes Sigrid
Kelsey Notwick
56:22
Yes everyone handles things differently
Maria Ortega
58:42
How can we use social media to benefit us and help us grow -Inner growth ? You guys mentioned many great ideas ^ also a better question what should we avoid ?
nefeli valerie
01:00:20
That’s why I’m saying we could examples so we can find solutions for ourselfs
Addie Lentzner
01:01:29
Hasini had something too :)
Maria Ortega
01:02:14
True !!
Zoe & Ivan Valerie
01:04:56
I liked Nefeli's proposal
cheryl 💜
01:07:17
I want to pose this question to some of Praja’s Design Thinking groups!!!
Phil
01:08:03
For the potential benefits of social media to be used, the business model needs to change. FB etc. use algorithms that seek to maximize advertising revenue based upon number of hits. So, sensational information is the driver, instead of value to the user.
aero 2
01:09:18
Mainstream media doesn’t help
EDiT
01:11:21
I find personal stories both positive and negative very useful
aero 2
01:11:51
I find that I connect with people on social media it helps sometimes
aero 2
01:12:28
You can hear other people’s experiences in terms of health
Taryn Helper
01:13:42
Storytelling :)
aero 2
01:16:37
Wouldn’t that be individual
Maria Ortega
01:17:10
Also setting boundaries
aero 2
01:18:51
Who makes the decision?
EDiT
01:19:56
Great question @Peter
cheryl 💜
01:20:36
Beautiful criteria! And if/when those criteria fluctuate within the person or are affected by the use of the phone…what then?
aero 2
01:22:18
Yes !!!
Kelsey Notwick
01:23:18
Yeah I think that is important for those who are comfortable
EDiT
01:23:23
Yes
Kelsey Notwick
01:23:36
I agree
aero 2
01:23:43
Which is why we need to let them speak
Maria Ortega
01:24:09
How much do we know about mental health? In the United States, almost half of adults (46.4 percent) will experience a mental illness during their lifetime.5 percent of adults (18 or older) experience a mental illness in any one year, equivalent to 43.8 million people.Of adults in the United States with any mental disorder in a one-year period, 14.4 percent have one disorder, 5.8 percent have two disorders and 6 percent have three or more.Half of all mental disorders begin by age 14 and three-quarters by age 24.In the United States, only 41 percent of the people who had a mental disorder in the past year received professional health care or other services.
aero 2
01:24:22
Thank you Maria
aero 2
01:24:45
So let’s hear them :)
Taryn Helper
01:24:54
so sorry have to run. see u later
Kelsey Notwick
01:24:59
Yeah I feel like people are afraid to reach out for help even when they could find support
aero 2
01:25:28
😥
aero 2
01:26:05
Do you mean resiliency ?
Kelsey Notwick
01:26:25
That is awful. This is what is contributing to mental health issues
Kelsey Notwick
01:26:45
People forget that their messages are going to people even if they are hiding behind a screen
aero 2
01:26:55
Thank you for that !!
Richard Fransham
01:27:14
I completely agree with sharing stories. If anyone would like to contribute a story that would be good to share on the Youth Rights Day website, please submit it to youthrightsday@gmail.com.
aero 2
01:27:29
Can we please hear from the youth?
Kelsey Notwick
01:27:50
I think offering support both as a parent and offering support through school or another resource
aero 2

nefeli valerie
01:29:20
Yes
cheryl 💜
01:29:29
I guess I’m asking more specifically, what kind of support? What does support look like to you?
Kelsey Notwick
01:30:28
Like listening to them when they have concerns and letting them know you are a safe place for questions and hard feelings. Also reminding school counselors and other resources in the community are great resources and they want to help them

Maria Ortega

What are some ideas to have a healthy mental health? What to do when overwhelmed /depressed/anxiety and most of all to seek help and not feel ashamed.Find something that you used to enjoy doing or enjoy/ reading /writing/sportsTalk to someone that you trust about your feelings remember that they are validated no matter how small orb big you think your problems are.Find a therapistTake care of your mind as well as your physical health remember that mental health is as important as physical.Show gratitude to yourself treat yourself with compassion.Reach out to an adult or someone for support know that you are alone.
nefeli valerie
01:35:18
Thanks for sharing :)
Kelsey Notwick
01:35:51
I think people should share their feelings with people they trust and also journaling because it is important to get thoughts out and clear your mind
