Even we booksellers who don’t run particularly activist shops get pushback from people who think we do!
klindt’s has like solid 50% conservative customers. It is not unusual for them to call us out for decisions we make in curation, events, etc. They almost always conjure some half-assed constitutional anecdote as a basis for their anger. Since 2016 JP has been keeping cheap copies of the constitution on hand and he gives them away to such patrons. He asks that they read it and come back to have a conversation.
Ooh! Giveaway copies of the constitution. Brilliant! I bet we could even find someone who would give us the constitution for free if we asked. Maybe the ACLU?
ha! yeah he actually pays for them but they are those little pamphlet type cheap copies. I’m not behind the counter much these days but I always hated it when those people did come back to have their discussion with Joaquin! Stresses me out! But mostly they take their copy and leave.
good idea on ACLU!
Another idea for using your platform to protest: host a letter-writing event! You can do this digitally. There’s a program called Vote Forward that is all about mailing physical letters to encourage people to vote

Yes! This is a fantastic idea!
Have you worked or partnered much or considered doing so with your local public library systems on events/author visits etc. ? Thank you for engaging program.

@Darren I am a smaller store and we have partnered with the local library an other community organizations for our events since we don't have space in our store (pre-COVID). I'm currently talking to the library about partnering on virtual events
