19:31
Same I've read 2

19:36
Ann Braden, I love your book. It gives people different perspectives of others' lives!!

20:05
i love T, so little words, but so much in them.

20:08
This book is literally exactly what our kids need after whatever this year was!

20:13
I also love T!

20:16
exaclty

20:32
I love every single character!

20:35
Yay, love Amber!

20:58
I am reading "Flight of the puffin in class

21:00
I'm totally going to read more chapters more later

21:01
T is my favorite character. After that, Vincent.

21:01
Love Puffin! My fifth graders are reading it now in class. :)

21:07
Hello from WA

21:13
yeah same, all their perspectives are so different, but they all come together!! that is my favorite parts

21:47
I had my chat thing on all panelists instead of all panelists and attendees whoops lol

21:54
XD lol

21:58
haha yana!

22:05
Which character is nonbinary?

22:17
T

22:25
wait what!?!?!

22:41
sorry was that a spoiler

22:42
i didn't think it was T!

22:46
I love Amber's and Matthew's wall art! Ann, my copy should be arriving today.

22:47
Don't give spoilers!

22:59
Ya I am still reading in class

23:08
Sorry I didn't mean to I was just answering their question

23:11
also, i love that his books are color coded

23:20
lol it's ok

23:45
Wait, should students have their cameras off? I'm confused..

24:02
i cant even see if my camera is on

24:05
I like reading from all the different perspectives of the characters. Also this book showing all their struggles can be so relatable sometimes as many kids could be going through the same thing

24:06
Ya same

24:08
i only see them

24:09
Sylvie, everyone's cameras are hidden right now.

24:20
Ok thank you.

24:45

25:22
congratulations! looking forward to getting my copy tomorrow!

"At the level of the heart", I am going to use that.

26:14
Mics are automatically muted in this webinar. Thanks.

26:42
Your welcome

27:02
Libby is my favorite!

27:14
There will be a recording.

27:31
i love libby too, i love her personality and art like her

27:50
I love the character libby too :D

28:15
I love them all, I can't even decide. But I gotta say, I love the strength and courage Libby has?

28:18
. *

28:22
yeah

28:47
I also enjoy art like she does and I like her personality too

29:42
I can't even imagine the guilt Jack has about his brother Alex dying. He is still thriving how to be good, though.

30:15
yea, when are we doing questions because i have one

30:50
@Savannah feel free to leave it in the chat or we’ll do Q&A at end

31:15
ok!

31:23
thanks!

32:30
My Question: What else inspired you to write the story besides Kara? How does it impact you besides other people?

33:08
Please no Spoilers

33:24
My question for you is, what inspired you to write the book and what inspired you to become an author?

34:24
My Question #2: Does writing this book and knowing it impacted kids make you somewhat feel like a hero?

34:38
Thank you for recording this. I have a daughter with Autism who needs me to leave. I want to add that reading helps me relax and the expression of authors words mean a lot to me. Peace! :)

36:25
My ? Is do you like flight of the puffin or your other book (sorry, I forget the title.)

36:36
Thanks for talking about labels and respecting how others may wish to be identified. Such an important conversation.

36:39
Better

37:27
Fantastic point, Amber! Thank you!

38:36
Another question I have is, what advice would you give to people who might want to be authors in the future. (I find writing a lot of fun and being an author sounds like a lot of fun)

39:50
i totally agree, stereotypes are just not fair to those people, and even though i am not non binary or gay or lesbian, but i have friends who are non binary and i accept that, and i want everyone to be able to

40:02
My Question #3: If you happened to meet people who were like the kids in your book, what advice would you give them?

40:12
Exactly

40:44
I have friends who are lgbt as well and I bet they would agree

41:26
Yes, Savannah. Stereotypes is just a wrong way of labeling people. Some people just see the world how to want to see it or feel comfortable seeing it.

45:26
kids are amazing

45:29
a question i have for amber is, you said you new your weren't straight in middle school, were you bullied for being the way you are and/or how did you work through that.

46:13
Yeah, and how did you know?

46:16
right now!

46:30
We are reading it right now! Ella Baker Elementary in Redmond, WA. <3

47:15
i was actually going to make cards after this!

47:33
Same Savannah!

47:45
I actually made one, and I'm gonna make more.

47:50
I'll definitely make some cards too

50:18
There are times when I feel mixed messages about labels. On one hand, I try to break down labels—I think of Morgan Freeman’s 60 minutes interview with Mike Wallace—On the other hand, I feel that labels are constantly being added. Reading The 57 Bus, opened my eyes to the importance of understanding labels. However, I feel that my habitual language is a challenge. Example: “Hey Guys!” I like the statement from Amber that practice and making mistakes will happen, but I need to keep practicing to create the normative.

50:22
your a great 42 i must say

51:05
I'm so glad to see more tv shows showing lgbt representation bc it makes me feel like we've made progress about showing its normal and that there is no reason for stereotypes.

52:12
https://gendercool.org/

52:58
that is horrible

53:40
Amber, how did you know that liking a female wasn't just a phase at such a young age?

54:11
Thank you so much for talking about this topic! My teen is nonbinary and we’re in a state that has great resources for gender affirming care, but it’s alarming to see all the bills all over the US.

57:03
Amber, yes, SO important!

57:57
trevorproject.org

58:29
my friend is non bi,and we always say we love each other and things like that, but we dont feel like we like like each other, we feel like we are siblings and i just love our relationship!

58:51
Well, that's awesome.

01:01:31
i just feel horrible for those people who won't let their child be who they want to be

01:01:44
Amber, how did you know that liking a female wasn't just a phase at such a young age?

01:02:17
Savannah, same

01:02:32
I would feel horrible too

01:02:58
it is just wrong to tell people how to feel

01:03:06
yesh

01:03:09
yeah

01:14:14
It’s just your internet, Savannah :.)

01:14:48
Love T’s chapters—short but super powerful! Totally grabs my students. Also, chapter 21 Libby was a WOW!!

01:14:58
Great advice, Ann.

01:15:06
i feel the same way!

01:15:12
thanks for answering my question and giving advice :)

01:15:51
most of my recent stories I've been writing contains lgbt representation through characters

01:16:07

01:21:33

01:22:13
this book is definitely what I need right now going through tough times during this quarantine

01:22:22
Love the cats tail in your last read— Road kill has some great lessons when crossing the road . . .

01:23:02
Matthew, I feel so fortunate to have been here for this, to see you in your space after listening to The Children’s Book Podcast (recommended to me by Ann). Thanks for the work you do.

01:23:43
Amber, thank you for the work you do, too. I walk away with more courage and strategy for helping the trans community around me.

01:23:46
Great conversation. Thank you!!
