What a wonderful, idea. I love that.
Cantor Elias Roochvarg, Charlotte, NC
25:05
Is there a "bouncer" who checks folk' documentation?
Beverly Post - she, her
25:25
So, the under-12 group can only join the outdoor service?
July Galper
26:02
I think it is great that you require proof of vaccination because people lie
phyllis werlin
27:11
How big is membership and where are you - sorry if i missed this.
Sable Cantus
27:22
What do vaccinated congregants have to worry about? Isn't this for the unvaccinated attendees safety?
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
27:36
@Phyllis We’re 1000-ish families in the city of Los Angeles
Sheri Allen (she/her)
28:04
By “proof” do you mean a vaccination card? cause we are also giving them the option of signing an attestation form just saying they have been vaccinated. I am not comfortable with this, but people felt it was too intrusive to make them show cards. (I live in Texas, so enough said!)
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
30:21
@Sheri we do mean a vaccination card, or sometimes a document they receive through the healthcare system through which they received vaccination. Our medical Taskforce made the recommendation that the number of individuals who would go to the lengths to falsify any proof of vaccination *and* the percentage of those individuals who might be COVID positive at the time of their attendance and therefore pose a risk to, remember, a vaccinated crowd, was not enough of a concern for us to doubt anyone’s proof.
Linda Zimmerman
30:22
We have a form online that congregants can complete with the dates of vaccination. If they show up on a Shabbat morning without filling out the form they need to show their card and they are marked off for future attendance
Judy Aranoff
30:46
Wondering what everyone is doing about their choirs this year!!!
Sable Cantus
30:55
Has anyone mentioned those who survived and have natural immunity now?
*Cantor David Lipp (he/him/his)
31:19
Rabbi/Cantor Chorny and McCloskey have written me they are not having choirs this year.
Cantor M. David Proser
31:35
Is any congregation still requiring WAIVERS from attendees?
Judy Aranoff
32:04
Wow. And they normally do have choirs? We have professionals plus volunteers.
Josh Friedman
32:07
We just dropped our waiver requirement.
Cantor Bryce Megdal
32:24
We have congregants who won’t come if masks are required — what do we do about this? I’m in Florida.
Hamilton Lempert, MD
32:48
Cincinnati Ohio - Choir is fully vaccinated and will be signing. Waivers, our board decided not to have them.
Josh Friedman
32:59
I believe vaccination is still recommended for those with prior infection.
Cantor Wendy Shermet
33:07
If all wear masks, are you doing “mask breaks” during each service so people can go outside and breathe?
Cantor Louise Treitman
33:13
QUESTION - are the leaders also masked? I understand that the congregants are
HazzanWeber
33:16
We just had to close our preschool again because someone who runs the school and is vaccinated got covid anyway.
Cantor Bryce Megdal
33:20
We are having a choir as well. They all felt comfortable being together if all were vaccinated. They didn’t want to wear masks while singing.
Hamilton Lempert, MD
34:38
Anyone requiring temperature checks and/or symptom checks before entering the building?
Joel Stern
34:48
Also interested in the answer to the question of whether the service leaders will be masked?
HazzanWeber
35:10
we had been checking temps but stopped that a couple of months ago.
Susan Goldstein
35:24
Will choir members wear masks?
HM
35:59
Are services being modified /shortened for this year?
*Michael McCloskey
37:08
Great question about mask breaks. We are running our service for two hours exactly. But yes, even at that running time, it is good to have a place for them to do this. We have several large outdoor spaces that are conducive to doing so.
Cantor Sarah Myerson
37:14
we’re trying to figure out if Torah procession is worth the risk this year
Joel Stern
37:36
How are you handing the Torah Service if leaders aren't masked. Are all those called up being asked to wear masks?
Jerry Simonowits
37:51
No processional or recessional for us this year.
HM
38:22
Are aliyahs brought up to bimah ? or doing at seats?
Susie Seletz
38:25
At Temple Beth Am, what was the thinking in allowing the masked under 12’s into the vaccinated service? Not concerned about the risk?
Cantor M. David Proser
38:39
We ask those having aliyot to recite brachot from their seats.
Cantor Jacqueline Rafii
38:43
Those in warmer areas (our synagogue is in the west valley in Los Angeles) - what are you doing about the heat for outdoor services?
Rabbi Adrienne Rubin
38:59
We are not having a choir this year. Currently, we are planning for vaccinated-only main services with no masks. We are requiring proof of vaccination in advance of HHDs.
Robin
39:26
We sent a survey to our members to have them rank their preference for which service. We are also trying to get an idea of who wants to come in person and who will stream.
Cantor Bryce Megdal
39:27
We can’t be outside in Orlando with the heat, humidity, bugs, etc. And we have storms constantly.
*Michael McCloskey
39:39
We are doing a hakafah around the bimah but are not bringing the Sefer Torah out into the aisle with the goal of discouraging many touching the Torah. This is heartbreaking to do this, but we know that instinct and emotion often influence our behaviors.
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
39:46
@Cantor Jackie: We’ve given out fans to counter the heat! We also considered starting early. That helped a lot last year.
Cantor Jacqueline Rafii
40:11
@Rabbi Cantor Chorny - thanks :)
Sarra Spierer
40:19
We’re having indoor services requiring masks and all adults vaccinated. The choir will be unmasked. The shofar service with a short stretch will be outdoors.
Leonard Harris
40:30
what about congregational singing - is it allowed?
*Michael McCloskey
40:45
We have shortened our service to about 2 hours for Rosh HaShanah and included opportunities for interactivity.
Mike Weis
40:53
Question for Dr. Schiffer when the time comes: is there any issue with transmission with Delta vis a vis unvaccinated children or does Delta follow the trends of the previous variants that is mostly spread by adults.
Judy Aranoff
42:41
Interactive how, Hillary?
Cantor M. David Proser
42:48
We're mostly keeping the COVID-shortened service from last year. Except last year, we did Yizkor pre-YK. This year, we will put Yizkor back into the YK service
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
43:05
@Susie: Great question for a physician. Apparently the risk posed to the unvaccinated teens is minimal, from the vaccinated folks. But a great medical question.
Alexander Massey
43:23
But congregational singing spreads aerosols that stay airborne for the duration.
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
43:26
Judy - Interactive in perhaps sharing during Yizkor, etc. And with screen prompts.
Johanna Schoss
43:29
Is that masked — congregants can sing if masked or if unmaksed?
*Michael McCloskey
43:30
The same for us. We will have a passive option on Vimeo Live.
*Michael McCloskey
43:57
For us that means masked.
HazzanWeber
44:08
We already did have in person HH services last year with people being preregistered. All were masked. This year we will not require registering ahead of time, as far as I know, but they all will be required to stick to our current policy having all non-vaccinated wear masks. no proof required.
Jerryl lynn Rubin-Arcata, CA.
44:24
Direction of risk for delta is from unvaccinated kids or grown ups To doubly vaccinated adults. Masks appear to prevent this. Good discussion, thanks
*Michael McCloskey
45:12
Thanks, we are honored to learn with and from you!
Sheri Allen (she/her)
50:59
I know of several healthy, vaccinated people who have gotten the Delta variant, and have gotten quite sick. Is this really so rare? Or is it becoming more common?
*Lizzie Shammash (she/her)
51:34
I have the same question- thanks, Sheri.
*Cantor David Lipp (he/him/his)
51:47
I'll ask.
HazzanWeber
52:11
We have one who is very ill in the hospital who was vaccinated.
AvrhmKen Cohen
53:02
Singing and chanting can increase the risk more than just a little…especially if delta is a more transmissible variant
Daniel Katz
53:34
What are your recommendations about 1) blowing shofar (or being near one) and 2 a guest chazan staying in a hotel or with a family?
Judy Aranoff
53:35
How crazy are we to require masks for congregants but we clergy and choir who are singing out yet far away, take off our masks?
phyllis werlin
53:35
Is there a way to save chat from an iphone?
phyllis werlin
53:47
This is a great discussion.
Allison Kapusta USCJ (she/her)
54:09
I will save the chat and send it out to everyone afterwards
phyllis werlin
54:21
That would be wonderful.
Sheri Allen (she/her)
54:29
Specifically: the rapid test or the PCR? I heard the rapid isn’t as accurate as the PCR
Steven Rein
54:39
If all individuals over 12 are vaccinated, would an indoor sanctuary be considered safe for the small number of children under 12 if they are wearing masks
Jerryl lynn Rubin-Arcata, CA.
54:39
Is this recorded and available because some of our congregational staff are working now and could not attend
brucemalin
54:56
There are people like myself who are immunosuppressed. Is there an antibody test that is available to quantify your risk?
Judy Aranoff
56:54
What about plexiglass in front of cantor or choir and then they take off masks? Is plexiglass which we know is less effective than masks still some sort of worthwhile protection?
Rabbi Adrienne Rubin
57:00
@AvrhmKen Cohen - yes. National Assoc. of Teachers of Singing recommends that if unvaccinated people are present, people should wear masks, stay distanced and leave an indoor space after 30 minutes, and not go back in until the air has been replaced.
HM
57:20
What is current understanding of recovered covid patients' natural immunity and need to be vaxed?
Sue Knight Deutsch
58:04
Does prior infection in addition to vaccination offer greater protection to being reinfected?
lisa berke-weidenbaum
58:47
we had the shofar blown out the window!
HazzanWeber
58:48
last year I did all shofar blowing outside
Melanie Field
01:00:25
Any update on when the under 12 vaccine might be ready?
Cantor M. David Proser
01:00:27
Our Baal Tekiah stands by an open door and "aims" the shofar outside.
Judy Aranoff
01:00:30
So if I am requiring 2 vaccines from my choir and one of my people had Covid plus only one vaccine, then that’s ok?
Sheri Allen (she/her)
01:00:38
Just curious if there is anyone who will still be doing HH services remotely this year?
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
01:01:41
@Sheri Allen We will still be making a version of every service we do available remotely… but no service will be exclusively remote.
Barbara's iPhone
01:02:05
We have sung in high holy days services for many years before this, the reopening plans do not seem to include distancing. Would hate to stay home but not comfortable yet in indoor crowd . Your thoughts thanks
G. Michael Horwitz
01:02:07
Are congregations cancelling out doing recessional processional walking through pews with Torah scrolls? What about passing Torah’s from one to the other etc? Or alternative ways to do this? Delta variant is showing up in individuals more under 50 I understand than aging population.
Cantor Jacqueline Rafii
01:03:17
@ Sheri, we are offering mostly in-person services that are livestreamed as well (so people can watch from home), but also offering one or two zoom-only services.
Alexander Massey
01:04:02
Can we hear more about singers and aerosols?
Melanie Field
01:04:14
Update on under 12 vaccine?
G. Michael Horwitz
01:04:25
Thanks Michael M
Cantor Bryce Megdal
01:04:26
How do we get the testers over the counter? What are they called?
lisa berke-weidenbaum
01:04:29
clarify: you are saying that unvax kids should not be in sanctuary indoors even with masks?
Judy Aranoff
01:04:43
How crazy are we to require masks for congregants but we clergy and choir who are singing out yet far away, take off our masks?
Jerryl lynn Rubin-Arcata, CA.
01:04:46
Should choirs be masked and distanced even if doubly bvaccinated?
Cantor M. David Proser
01:05:10
Are we still as concerned about passing COVID by surface contact (passing Torah scrolls for instance) as we were last year?
Cantor Neil Schwartz
01:05:22
from a colleague: What is the current medical opinion on booster shots?
*Cantor David Lipp (he/him/his)
01:05:41
Judy -- I think the assumption is that all the unmasked are vaccinated and the congregants may or may not be.
Cantor Louise Treitman
01:06:08
QUESTION: If the leaders are required to mask, is there a well-made and comfortable “singer’s mask” made now?
*Cantor David Lipp (he/him/his)
01:06:12
I don't think Covid is spread by surface contact as much as as in the air.
Steven Rein
01:07:25
Question for Dr. Schiffler: If all over 12 are vaccinated; can under 12 with a mask on be safely in a sanctuary. Assumption is they will be pretty far apart from the next under 12 child.
HazzanWeber
01:08:48
We have not been wearing masks on the bimah but have had the first 6 rows closed in the sanctuary and the Rabbi and I on opposite sides of the bimah.
*Josh Schiffer
01:09:15
Hi everyone, I would suggest the Abbott Binax or Ellume COVID-19 home test kit.
Mark Bisman
01:09:29
Thanks Helpful and enlightening
Cantor Lori Frank
01:09:36
how do you orchestrate an outside Shofar blowing with inside services?
Mark Bisman
01:09:37
Have to leave. sorry
Joel Caplan
01:10:02
Ask me about custom made masks. Very comfortable. I led davening for 5 hours double masked last year, no problem.
*Cantor David Lipp (he/him/his)
01:10:17
Joel -- give us a link!
*Michael McCloskey
01:10:21
Thanks, Joel. Great to be with you!
alex
01:10:42
what if you are a guest cantor are you still allowed to travel in the USA
phyllis werlin
01:10:45
Boston, no other spaces to have services, and we will be in sanctuary and we will live stream. On shabbat we have relaxed our rules ( 25-30 pple) and i havent been masked mych now.
Steven Rein
01:10:58
Should social distancing be required if masking if required.
Susan Goldstein
01:11:05
Singers masks?
phyllis werlin
01:11:11
H joel! Most chazzans i know didnt not like those singing masks!
Jerryl lynn Rubin-Arcata, CA.
01:11:11
Is there any creative way we can stay in touch with one another and medical professional for additional questions that come up?
Allison Kapusta USCJ (she/her)

Judy Aranoff
01:11:35
I sometimes use a singers mask, but it is quite warm!
Linna Ettinger
01:11:39
Thank you
*Michael McCloskey
01:11:39
A recommend for our chazzanim. Try biking in your mask. It really helps endurance when you are singing.
Cantor M. David Proser
01:11:42
I'm afraid people will be resistant to RE-masking after unmasking for the past few months
Cantor Bryce Megdal
01:12:01
Also, some places don’t require masks, so people will ask why we are when other places aren’t.
*Rabbi Cantor Hillary Chorny (she/her)
01:12:09
