41:27
Great insights Sharon, Emily and Katie! Our corporate culture is rapidly changing along with the needs of our employees.
Angie Chaplin
43:07
Excellent point, Claudia. Culture is also what’s not being said, and what’s not being done. I’m seeing companies and leaders missing out on opportunities to practice DWYSYWD… do what you say you will do.
Jennifer Terry, Des Moines Water Works
43:22
So happy to see you, Claudia!! You are ALWAYS so insightful!
Claudia Schabel
46:40
Excellent point, Angie.
Claudia Schabel

What is NOT getting done is also setting the tone.
Debra Salowitz
49:51
The real elephant in the room for recruitment AND retention in Iowa (not just in Des Moines) is the negative impact on our state’s and community’s brand of the kind of legislation being promoted and enacted in recent years. Broadening the definition and understanding of DEI, there isn’t a group that hasn’t been affected. It’s not enough to pursue “behind the scenes” conversations with individual legislators but it’s crucial for business leaders to publicly amplify their voices through The Partnership and local chambers. Make no mistake, what’s happening in Iowa is effectively yanking up the welcome mat not only to businesses thinking of moving here but definitely to the skilled workforce we want to keep here as well as attract. The competition on a national level has never been keener.
Theresa Whitfield

I got this podcast from a LinkedIn connection yesterday and it’s worth a listen. Very insightful in regard to the employee perspective. https://www.tablegroup.com/95-re-entry-sucks/
Carly Harper
56:30
This is great conversation! Can the panelist please share the engagement strategies that have kept employees connected in a hybrid setting?
Chris Conetzkey - Publisher, Business Record
56:50
Great question Carly... I'll make sure we get this one in!
April King
57:20
Anyone have clients experience leadership that is overlooking candidates for long term succession due to not being present in the office?
Claudia Schabel
58:01
Hi Debra! The business community is instrumental in helping create an environment that attracts and retains talent. When businesses use their voices in a respectful and consistent manner to advocate for inclusivity, they can make a ripple effect in their communities and create change.
Chris Conetzkey - Publisher, Business Record
58:08
Another great question April. We definitely have this teed up as a topic to dive into.
Scott Bennett
59:44
In a flexible work environment - how do you encourage employees to come into the office more frequently to gain the positives of in person?
J. Tucker
01:02:39
What other unique engagement strategies do you use to ensure remote employees feel included?
Angie Chaplin
01:06:45
YES! Leadership is a way of life… =)
SharonGaddy-Hanna
01:07:07
Great perspective Gilmara! Great to hear you!
Gilmara Vila Nova-Mitchell
01:07:47
Thank you, Sharon. Likewise!
Angie Chaplin
01:08:20
Unexpressed expectations are resentments waiting to happen (paraphrased from Brene Brown).
jstapleton
01:08:31
Ah such a great point about silent expectations.
Ann Block
01:09:00
Spot on.
Erin Young
01:09:12
Yes!
Amy Boyce
01:09:16
Love the idea of setting and sharing expectations - we also need to model them as leaders!
Emily Forrester (she/her)
01:09:26
We refer to it as work-life blend, not work-life balance, to demonstrate our support for the blended moments we all have. Whether you're working from home or the office, you're bringing your whole self and your whole life with you.
Cleophus (Cleo) Franklin
01:09:42
Would love to hear some best practice and specific examples re: culture strategy actions taken to help develop, support, measure, and actively course correct within their businesses. Even actions recently adopted or discarded.
Erin Young
01:09:44
Love work-life blend!

The term work-life integration is hot right now, too!
Gilmara Vila Nova-Mitchell
01:10:01
Emily, I love that term. ;-)
SharonGaddy-Hanna
01:10:41
Sharon - Very nice response! Great job! Proud of you!
Angie Chaplin
01:10:43
Love the language around work/life… blend, integration, etc. EXCELLENT!
Gilmara Vila Nova-Mitchell
01:11:40
Sharon- I appreciate how you differentiated structure from clarity.
April King
01:11:53
The camera on/off debate is a hot topic for inclusion as well.
MD
01:12:21
Unfortunately the companies that need to hear this don’t participate in these sorts of events. I commeed you all for being open-minded, flexible, and genuinely valuing your employees.
Carrie Clausen
01:12:33
i see leaving your camera on as a form of respect, like eye contact with someone who is talking.
Carrie Clausen
01:13:01
You don't have to wear pants, but you have to have your camera on! ;)
Kristel
01:16:56
Like your ADA points. Something we have talked about.
Anne Hansen (she/her/hers)
01:16:56
As a full time remote employee I find the conversations about return to work nerve-racking. I finally feel like we are on equal footing so finding the way to always maintain that equity for all “not in the office” folks will be huge.,
Angie Chaplin
01:18:10
DWYSYWD… do what you say you will do. Leaders who model the way align their behaviors with their values, and that might be the missing piece for many organizations.
Claudia Schabel
01:19:07
Agree, Anne.
Elyse Ogbourne
01:21:06
Did you say the 3 hours was vacation time or part of their work week?
Sydney Vrban
01:21:48
Love our mental health hours 🙌🏻
Susan.Huppert@dmu.edu
01:22:44
Gilmara- I wrote down three words you used - how do we celebrate- recognize and appreciate our virtual workers. Thank you for this.
Meg Whitty
01:23:15
Elyse - To answer your question for Navigate those 3 hours are part of our work week. You don’t need to take any PTO! We can take those three hours whenever you need / want. And Agreed Sydney - they’re so great!
Gilmara Vila Nova-Mitchell
01:23:26
I am glad to hear it resonated for you, Susan!
Meagan K
01:23:44
Hi Elyse, it is part of our work week. We currently call them "Mental Health Hours". It's not required to use them, but encouraged to help us not burnout. Nice to take a break, go on a walk, etc. I personally use the time to study for graduate school.
Elyse Ogbourne
01:23:55
Thank you!
Mark
01:25:28
We talk about listening to your team. What has been a successful strategy from getting this type of information from a small office team (less than 30 team members). Is it open discussion, survey, one on one meetings, etc.? Trying to figure out how all are heard and not just the ones that are typically comfortable talking in team meetings.
Angie Chaplin
01:26:21
Incorporating “resilience hours” is a fantastic and proactive approach to employee wellbeing, that’s great!
Kasi
01:27:00
Mark - we have very small office so we did an anonymous google form and we got a lot of great feedback.
Jayne Armstrong
01:27:22
Are any of your businesses that use a hybrid model also incorporating a "hoteling" workplace environment?
Chrissy Smith
01:28:29
Fantastic insight! One size does not fit all, and each employee is motivated and inspired uniquely.
Angie Chaplin
01:28:30
Understanding communication, interaction, and motivation preferences through DISC, Enneagram, or other assessments helps leaders tailor their encouragement strategies to individual employees.
Carly Harper
01:29:02
Great thoughts! Thank you!!!
Emily Forrester (she/her)
01:29:09
I totally agree with Claudia - the recognition piece is SO important to minimize burnout risk! A well-worded, thoughtful thank you that recognizes the value, effort, and time that was put into an outcome can be really impactful.
Amy Eaton
01:30:19
Any ideas to share on re-entry strategies for the 2 million women who have left the workforce?
Vivian Lovanrack
01:30:36
Love the idea of Lifestyle Benefits!
Cleophus (Cleo) Franklin
01:31:13
With talent acquisition becoming more and more competitive...what are some strategies being taken and shifts to identify, recruit, and acquire talent?
Gilmara Vila Nova-Mitchell
01:32:00
Troy- I am so impressed by how you have led your organization! Lots of wonderful, concrete examples shared.
Angie Chaplin
01:33:09
I am an advocate for proactive wellbeing strategies through on-site therapy, coaching, EAP providers, etc. Make it easy for staff to access, and encourage their use, rather than refer / send staff to “fix” performance or behavior.
Lisa Wolf
01:33:47
Thank you to all of you for great insight and thoughts. We have implemented many of things you have talked about, including a robust benefit package and flexibility. Can one of you speak to how you have balanced employee engagement with employee entitlement?
Troy W. Vincent
01:34:02
Thank you Gilmara. I appreciate that so much. It has been a journey for sure, we have some wonderful purpose driven people here that are finding ways to connect.
Theresa Whitfield
01:35:08

Trust people in how they organize their schedule, decide to come to the office or not, take care of their own personal or child appointments, etc.
