when the cranes build a nest in a farm field is it likely to be successful?
Janelle Wicks
56:10
That is a great question. There is some debate about that and the feeling is that if the colts can hatch and be mobile enough to move between fields before haying, then they have a better chance of success. We can discuss this more during the Q&A!

In 1984, I saw pelicans nesting on the Headquarters Road east of the highway.

is it feasible to kayak on the lake anywhere?
Janelle Wicks
01:14:44
This is a great question. Currently, it is not legal to kayak on Malheur Lake with the exception of hunters during hunting season from the hunter access point which is at the north side of the lake. Alternatively, kayaking at Krumbo Reservoir is allowed.

How often do you encounter rattle snakes out there, any close encounters?
Janelle Wicks
02:03:08
I had a close encounter this spring on the Crane Pond Overlook Trail, but I was able to see it clearly and back away slowly. This I one of the reasons it is very important to stay on trails and to keep your dogs on a leash. It is nearly impossible to spot a snake coiled and resting if you are not on a cleared and established path.
