Byerly Foundation
41:49
but almost anyone will go to lunch with you and you can invite to lunch or to coffee to show the desire for their engagement. ED has to engage to show how engagement works - sorry I am thinking out loud here modeling engagement is important and sometimes where I need to work a bit more
Paige Stephenson
43:14
Pre-COVID we hosted board lunches for small sub-sets of the board to build board member relationships
Amanda Sito - Trident United Way
45:40
Isn't that somewhat on the board member to not over extend themselves and be aware of COI?
Christina Galardi
46:44
Yes. We tend to gravitate toward those who have board experience to recruit, when there are people out there who could be more engaged because they don't have experience and could dedicate focus to one thing
Catherine Schumacher-PEP (she/her)
46:47
I also think we need to be thoughtful about traditional notions of Board development and how we curate our Board. This is deeply connected to issues of equity and inclusion and providing space for the voices of those that we serve in a meaningful way. That broadens the notion of role clarity and emotional engagement.
Benjamin Bullock
53:02
Even Robert's Rules says that there should be no discussion without a concrete proposal that the body take some kind of action
Ericka Plater
55:33
what's your take on consent agendas? I've switched to this with my board and it has helped with discussions
Paige Stephenson
56:09
Consent agendas enabled us to make room for more real engagement.
Ericka Plater
56:50
Agree! Thanks, Paige
Christina Galardi
59:10
Reminds me of continuous SWOT analysis... What's Changed = threats; What's New = opportunities
Patsy Whitney
01:01:28
So true!!!
Dawn Darby
01:01:29
I resemble that remark
Christina Galardi
01:01:44
Eliminate the 80/20 rule of participation - recruit fewer and better
Paige Knowlson- Pattison's Academy
01:01:45
Does each member fall on this continuum individually, rather than the board as a whole?
Catherine Schumacher-PEP (she/her)
01:04:27
We have started engaging the Board and staff in both designing our committees and offered an opt-in structure for plugging them in from year to year. It's not just the usual suspects of Governance, Finance, etc.

01:07:12
