Friends - I’m looking for samples of outreach on the Economic Impact Payments/Stimulus Checks to people experiencing homelessness - whether in shelters or unsheltered. I’ll share whatever I find. Thanks. maureenhowardconsulting@gmail.com

Thank you Allexa this is wonderful news. You see in my past I have worked as an ASL Interpreter and the advocate for Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Deaf Blind people at the Hearing Speech and Deafness Center from 1990 to 2001 I worked very hard in those years to promote equal access so it makes me smile to be updated on how technology is keeping up. I now will educate and advocate to organizations with hopes they will actually use it. Feel free to call me

Tedd and Diane, please ask Inslee's Admin & WA delegation to run the numbers and and seriously consider housing as a right and provide housing rather than shelter for people experiencing homeless: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/15/opinion/sunday/homeless-crisis-affordable-housing-cities.html?action=click&pgtype=Article&state=default&module=styln-opinion-inequality-series&region=MAIN_CONTENT_2&context=storylines_related_links

My audio went out and I left the meeting and re-entered. You could try switching from computer to phone audio (or vice versa depending on how you are connected now)

Good pointers Sam. When my internet is shaky, I have also found that just calling in via my phone and using that as the audio source fixes the problem.

To be clear, these are existing HUD programs but additional funding was provided via each program to help communities respond to COVID related needs.

Agree with the National Alliance's recommendations, we need to house people, but what about those in crisis? How do we take care of people who you are saying need housing (those currently unhoused) and those entering homelessness at the same time? What should be in place to meet the immediate needs of those entering homelessness in crisis? How do we prioritize those in crisis and those currently unhoused? What could we do to interrupt this continuous cycle?
Samatha Anderson
48:18
Yes we did see how quickly they were able to put up temp shelters that medically worked :)
Karen Studders
48:38
Thank you Nan and NAEH staff! Encourage you to get this to governors' offices!
Joanne Iverson
48:58
We cannot always get to everyone......this is so challenging
Sarah Hinman
50:13
our county has a 0% vacancy rate so it seems unrealistic to use our ESG funds for RRH- any thoughts about that?
Thalia Vaillancourt
50:46
Joanne I have the same question as a Domestic Violence service provider. A person fleeing does not qualify for many services
Samatha Anderson
50:48
Would FEMA cover semi-temp shelters? Like school portable shelters?
lindsey schromen-wawrin
50:48
Not prioritizing preventing people from becoming homeless seems to mean that we will continue to wait for people to be in crisis before they get help? Isnt it more expensive to help someone get out of homelessness than to help someone stay in housing?
Thalia Vaillancourt
51:37
I do agree with the framework though
Karen Studders
51:48
WA folks: Do you know why WA has not applied for FEMA funds yet to support non-congregant shelter? Is WA intending to apply?

Any Agreed. See endless cycle of homelessness without addressing the housed people in crisis.
Jessica Lea
52:20
At this point, the main issue for my county is the complete lack of affordable rental units. Most of our homeless community has to wait years to get into local housing of any type
Maureen Howard
52:58
We’ve asked Pierce County to keep a list of potential hotel acquisitions in case there is CARES Relief Fund money available about Nov. 1 - if it looks like there is any unused CRF money.
Jessica Lea
53:48
We need to implement a Permanent Supportive Program rather than focusing on temporary solutions
Kiser MJ
53:54
Nan- What do you hear about CoC Bonus funds?
Karen Studders
54:14
And non-profits have to change their service models from congregant shelters to rooms with bathrooms.
Samatha Anderson
59:39
What about sites like Puyallup fair grounds to house temp built shelters if need be? similar to what was built in shoreline? And what about building similar for eastern Washington has or hasn't been done yet?
Maureen Howard
01:00:22
The nonprofits using hotel rooms also have to rethink their expectations for folks using the rooms - how much “freedom” do guests have? Can they come and go? invite someone into their room? Use any common space? Implementing COVID precautions, etc.
Kelli Jess
01:05:13

IMHO Youth aging out is connected to homelessness -- both involve values of profits over people. "Our housing crisis is a symptom of America’s wealth — and its indifference," per NYT opinion I put in chat earlier. This indifference is very visible in WA state with our regressive taxation system. Businesses come here because they do not have to pay state income taxes...and as the pandemic revealed they make lots of money, while municipalities, WA state and poor and low income go into debt and have huge deficits. WE must strategically connect homelessness and housing and make housing a right in WA State.
lindsey schromen-wawrin
01:16:37
Housing as a human right means that a person shouldn't lose their housing because they owe debt

Michele Thomas
01:19:01
Totally agree with you CM Schromen-Wawrin! We are looking into ways to prevent landlords from evicting tenants if they get state funded rental assistance.
Michele Thomas
01:20:09
We welcome input on how to best achieve that goal.

If WA doesn't apply for FEMA funds, tough to get other federal resources to prevent evictions.
