I was thinking the same thing Jim and Valentina. This is one of the most engaging Zoom event I've attended these past many months.
No more calling it a "guilty pleasure." Why on earth would you feel guilty about reading for pleasure?
I loved the comment about women's empowerment as a common theme in all types of romance.
What Thien-Kim Is saying is a large part of why the Bookstore Romance Day focus this year is on crossover Romance--Romance with elements of S-F or Fantasy or Mystery or books in those genres with romantic storylines. So many bookstores already carry Romance or Romance-adjacent fiction, but don't recognize or market it as such.
Every single romance book I've read has took the time to show consent, super important
Yes, Julia. There are so many current romances that are modeling consent in such wonderful responsible ways...folks should be actively handing these to high schoolers, male and female
Even fatal sex in House of Cards!
I would LOVE to go to one of her lady dinners
That's a keeper
My thought exactly, Summer.
I can never meet your hubs, Julia. Cowering.

To answer the last question: You as a bookseller can help new and midlist authors by reading their books and handselling them. Instead of jumping right to the bigger authors. The customers probably already know about those authors. Intro them to the new ones
Thank you all!
Thank you everyone!!
